證嚴上人講述《藥師經》共三次。
第一次講述於一九七三年十月，在花蓮靜思精舍，那年娜拉颱風災情慘重。
第二次講述於一九八四年五月，在吉林路臺北分會，那年 上人開始籌建慈濟醫院、募人募心募款。
第三次講述於二○○一年七月，在花蓮靜思精舍，時跨千禧年，
上人感於倫理道德失序，人際間關係緊張，充滿對立、衝突、紛爭、冷漠，
自二○○一年起，在早課時間，復闡述《藥師經》。
本次經藏結集，編纂團隊
選用二○○一年開示稿，作為編纂依據。
因二○○一年開示場次最多，內容也因慈濟四大志業
陸續開枝展葉，所涵蓋的層面廣闊深遠，
上人所舉之佛典故事、慈濟美善、社會事件、人間百態，更豐富貼切。
全文因為有原始錄音帶重新逐字聽校，內容更為精確完整。
編纂團隊恪遵「信達雅」之原則，
謹遵 上人開示脈絡與語境，取其「信實」；
依文字承載之義理與順暢，求其「通達」；
