A General Hospital Started from 50 Cents Early on a summer morning in September 1986, we took the 6:30 a.m. train from Taipei, and entered slowly into the new station in Hualien City. A few young doctors from National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) who had just returned from their “Taiwan-Saudi Medical Mission” in Saudi Arabia were assigned to Hualien on weekly basis, because of the newly founded Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien, which started a cooperative education project with NTUH, were in dire need of assistance.
